Faba enjoyed the peaceful, calm surrounding a bit longer, until she heard a sound. She walked slowly towards the sound, following her ears, when she saw what caused the sound, she hid behind a tree.

There was a boy, sitting underneath a big oak tree, his knees pulled up, clenched against his body. His head bend down and resting on his knees, he hiccuped the now and then.

Faba, who still had the basket with mushrooms in her hand leaned in a bit, because the boy was talking. She recognized him, it was Nox, a local rascal who was known because of the pranks he made. She was unsure what to do and tried to understand, what he was sobbing about.

“I miss… embrace.. voice,” the boy started to talk louder between his sobs. “ I am so… alone, I have no-one… no-one to talk to…, no-one to play with. ”Fabe remembered the story about Nox his mother, one day she had left the village Beau, to harvest fruits in the forrest and wasn’t been seen since. Faba didn’t know how it was to have parents, she was a fairy and one day, she was alive and aware.. just like that. Although she couldn’t completely understand, she knew family was important to elf’s.

She felt bad for Nox, now realizing that he had been alone since this day. Faba’s throat felt a bit swollen, she had a knot in her stomach, she leaned with her left upper arm into the tree and forgot about her surroundings for a little moment. The basket with mushrooms fell and made a dull, clunk sound when it hit the forest floor. Her eyes widened, she stepped back automatically and tried to hide behind the tree.

It was too late, Nox heard the basket falling and immediately responded.

“Where you eavesdropping on me? I have seen you.” His voice sounded thick and strange, he rubbed his neck and tried to pull himself together. Faba felt her blushes turning red, she felt ashamed en slowly stepped from behind the tree. Her eyes focussing on her feet, she told Nox how sorry she was and if she could help him with something. “Faba, I came her to be alone, instead, you where there overhearing me,” he said with a bit more confidence now.

“ I am so sorry Nox, I was just picking mushrooms and heard sounds when I was finished and, and… I thought maybe someone was in need.” she replied. Faba tried to get her confidence back and looked shortly at Nox, his eyes where red and she felt sorry for him. To Faba’s relieve, Nox was able to show her a little smile, “ It’s oke Faba,” he said, “ There is nothing you or anyone can do.” Faba nodded, picked up her basket and started to collect the mushrooms again. Nox came over to help her and asked her softly if she could keep it a secret. Faba stood up with the filled basket and offered Nox her hand as a formal agreement. Nox took her hand and shook it firm to accept. Faba promised Nox she wouldn’t talk about it with anyone. They looked each other in the eye and the both of them couldn’t resist to smile. “Do you want to join me on my way back to Beau, Nox?” Faba asked. Nox nodded.

And here, the adventures of Faba and Nox begin.

Part II (An unexpected meeting)

Faba and Nox became good friends after their meeting, last spring, and have been spending loads of time together. Today will be a day, they will not forget soon, today, promises to be the beginning, the beginning of Faba and Nox' adventures.

It is still early, but, by the looks of it, it will be a beautiful summer day. The sun is rising in the west and its already warm rays are touching the tree leaves, for the first time this morning. The flowers are slowly opening, dew drops are falling from the flower petals and disappear in the dewy grass. The inhabitants of the village Beau are slowly waking up, also the little animals that live there are awake by now. The butterflies and bees are visiting the colorful flowers, lizards searching their way to a nice place to warm their body in the first sun.

All tough everything is waking up slowly, step by step, Faba and Nox are filled with an incredible amount of energy, ready to rock the day. Nox, gave Faba a firm shoulder thrust, “Let’s go out! Look around you, it’s a beautiful day!” Faba almost fell, she didn’t foresee the incoming nudge, but recovered quickly, bashed against Nox and put her arm around his shoulder. “Let’s go and climb a tree! “No! We should go to the lotus pond, it’s already so warm!” Nox answered. Faba frowned, considered his idea: “We have all day, we can go there later,” she replied to his idea.

Faba and Nox were enjoying the beautiful day, they climbed trees, told each other jokes, ate berries, played hide and seek with friends and tried the catch little bugs. After the hours they’ve had been playing, their faces and clothes where dirty and it was warm, really warm. “Lets go to the pond Nox!” Faba preposed to Nox while she lay in the green grass with her arms spread out wide.

Nox, who was whistling a melody on a blade of grass, stopped, looked at Faba and stood up. He reached his hand out to Faba: “It’s the perfect time for a swim Faba, let’s go.” Faba grabbed his hand and stood up with strength. Together they went to the lotus pond, on their way there, they played: I spy with my little eye. It was Nox' turn: “I spy with my little eye…, something green.” Faba looked around and called out numerous of things:

“Grass, leaves, caterpillar or a lotus leave,” she said, when she saw they where almost at the pond. Nox shaked his head in denial and smiled naughty because he foresaw Faba’s reaction if she would find out.

“I don’t know what it is Nox, I called out everything that is green,” she said and shrugged her shoulders. They where at the pond, suddenly Nox stopped walking and grabbed her hand: “Faba, look down, in front of your feet.” A big toad sat there, his leathery back full with big bumps. Faba pulled up her left leg and squeezed hard in Nox' hand: “ Iehw! Nox!” Faba was startled because she didn’t see the toad and it was really big. “You did it again Nox! You scared me again!” she shouted with a high voice. Faba jumped on Nox' back and started to tickle him, Nox couldn’t bare it and she knew it. Tickling was her revenge. Laughing and screaming they ran to an open area and frolicked for a while. Then suddenly a heavy, low voice spoke, loud but slow: “Hey, you little rascals! I would like to have my peace and enjoy the warm sun.” Both, Nox and Faba stopped frolicking, they looked around to see where the voice came from. Faba’s eyes grew wide, she saw a big lizard lying on an enormous rock. The lizard was black and on his back he had a big stripe, the stripe colored from dark purple on the outside to red, to orange, to yellow, to a bright green centre. The sun shone on it’s tough but sparkling skin, it looked like it was inlayed with black diamonds.

It was beautiful. Nox saw the expression on Faba’s face and followed her gaze to find the lizard at the end of it. For the first time Nox had nothing to say, the both of them grew silent because of the beauty of the lizard.

“Finally I can rest again,“ the lizard said and closed his eyes. After a while, Faba and Nox averted their eyes from the lizard and they looked each other in the eye. It was for a while almost like they couldn’t talk anymore. Nox was the first one to find his words again: “Wow Faba,” he said. Again it was quiet for a while. Their gazes went to the lizard again, “It’s beautiful,” sighed Faba now. Nox could be very perky, he stood up and walked to the lizard. He cleared his throat and said: “Mr. lizard, how can it be that you are so bright, shiny and full with colors?”

The lizard opened its eyes, looked Nox in the eye and said with his deep voice: “My name is Pointers, you are all dirty and grey with dust, I want to keep my body clean.” “Like I said before, I need to rest and warm my cold, old body.” Nox swallowed, he looked at his clothes and saw that Mr. Pointers was right. He was disappointed because he was curious and wanted to know more about the lizard. He opened his mouth to talk, closed it again, looked at the lizard and finally had the courage to talk. “Mr. Pointers, if I go bathing in the pond and return afterwards, will you still be here?” Mr. Pointers didn’t even took the trouble to open his eyes: “Maybe young man…., maybe.”

Slowly Nox stood up, he saw Faba was also standing up and together they walked to the water, without saying a word.

Would they see Mr. Pointers again?

Part III (No No No Nox)

Faba and Nox where still impressed by the big lizard: Mr. Pointers. They hoped to see him again, but if that would bring them something they wished for… When they where at the water Faba found her courage to talk again. “Amazing Nox! Mr. Pointers is Marvelous!” she said admiring. “A bit cranky tho,” Nox replied. He went into the water with his clothes on, Faba followed. The fresh water reset their brains again, they took off their overclothes, washed them and laid them in the sun to dry. “It’s playtiiimmee,” Nox said with a weird voice, he ran to the water again, clasped his knees to his body and made a cannonball. The water splashed in all directions and with his cannonball he created waves in the normally calm water. Faba stood on a rock and dove gracious. The pond was not very deep, but deep enough to dive.

When Faba came up, her head was green from water plants that stuck in her hair. She tried to get the long tangled water plants out of her hair, but it was hard. Nox saw it and laughed at her, “You look like a swamp monster Faba!.” Faba looked annoyed at Nox, turned her back to him and started flapping her wings with all she’d got. Water drops flew like a horizontal rainstorm towards Nox. He crossed his arms in front of his face to prevent the water and some of the water plants from coming in his eyes and face. When Faba stopped, she turned around and said with a powerful and satisfied voice:

“Who is the monster now!” It was not a question, she looked pleased with the result at Nox. Nox stood in the water, that reached chest high, his arms were full with water plants.

He hadn’t be able to stop all the water plants from coming in his face, some where hanging over his head and even one lay crossed over his face. Nox raised his elbows, lowered his wrist and tried to shake the plants off. He didn’t think about paying Faba back at the moment, he wanted to get the water plants of, it didn’t feel very pleasant. Faba was swimming around and saw some frogs sitting on waterlily leafs. The frogs looked a bit moody Faba thought, she wondered why the frogs often looked so cranky and displeased. She looked at the frogs for a while, her thoughts stayed at the frogs, she wished they where happy for once.

Suddenly she felt a firm tug on her leg and she disappeared shortly underneath the water line, water came into her nose and when she came up she started spluttering. The water that came in her trachea burned a bit, she coughed firm and managed to get the water out. “Don’t dare to splatter me like that again Faba, it’s not fair that you are having wings and I don’t! Nox wasn’t angry, but he was serious, Faba could see it in his eyes. “Sorry Nox, you are right, is’t not a fair way to play,” she replied with honest regrets. Again she looked at the frogs, “Why are they always so cranky?” she asked Nox. Nox shrugged his shoulders and said: “Maybe they are cranky because they are old.”

The frogs seemed to look angrier by the minute and one jumped from a leave and went away. “I don’t know, I wished they where happy too,” Faba replied to Nox' nonsense. One of the frogs opened his mouth and shut it again, he crossed eye with Faba.  Then the frog opened his mouth again and Faba saw that underneath his jaw something appeared, it looked like a bubblegum bell.

“We..e ar..e no, o,o, t cra, a, a,nky,” it sounded, “ We..e juh, uh, ust wa, a, nt ou, ou, our, pea, ea, eace.” the frog seamed to say. The bubblegum alike bell underneath his jaw was away now. Again, the frog opened his mouth, and the air sac was blown up again. With the same stuttering voice as before it said: “You turbulent creatures made our waters wavy, it’s hard to sit on a leave and find food already. “ Nox didn’t like the frogs answer, it wasn’t just his pond and he told the frog what he thought. The frog’s looking even more angry by now stayed put, they where way to small to do anything but talking or going away. Faba thought that it wasn’t really nice what Nox said and told it to him. What followed was their first fight. Faba thought it was the frogs living area and house, they where disturbing it, Nox was convinced that everybody should share open area’s and the frogs already looked fat enough.

That last thing made Faba even more angry, because it was not nice to say they looked fat, maybe they needed it to survive colder days.

They kept shouting to each other and where kind of sour, the frogs where long gone and Faba didn’t know how to talk sense into Nox anymore. She left the pool and went to her clothes, a tear welling up in the right corner of her left eye, she didn’t want to fight with Nox. Her clothes where dry and cleaner as before, she noticed it was getting colder and put on her clothes. She sat herself on a trunk, and thought about her fight with Nox, she couldn’t understand why he was so unkind sometimes.

She was cold, slowly Faba came to realize she had fallen asleep against the trunk! She forced her eyes open with unease, looked around and noticed the sun was starting to set. Then she remembered the fight she had with Nox, where was he? Faba was starting to feel uncomfortable with the idea of the sun setting and having no clue where Nox was. She stood up, she noticed his clothes where gone and walked to the pond. Nox wasn’t there either. She started to shout his name: “Nox!..,” “Nox?” “Where are you Nox?”

An interesting day, they’d had already, but it hadn’t end jet. Will Faba find Nox and will they get back home in time?

Part IV (Out of sight)

Until now it had been an interesting and beautiful day, but as Faba had fallen asleep after their fight, Nox had gone elsewhere. Faba shouted and searched, where could he possibly be? She started panicking a bit, she walked a round around the pond, but hadn’t seen any sign of him.

It was dangerous to fly right now, predators might notice her, she looked around to check if there were any predatory animals. Even though she knew that it was a risk, she flew up to see where Nox was.

She flew above bushes and went higher, she flew higher as the small tree’s that were growing in the area. Her eyes crossed over the area, checking every rock and tree, she couldn’t find him. Slowly she went down again, the tears were welling up in her eyes, where was Nox?

Faba felt her body filling up with stress, her muscles tightened, her back started to hurt. It would get dark soon and they still had to go home, it was getting cold and it could be dangerous to be alone in the forest at night. Faba had multiple scenarios in mind, what could happen.

She forced herself to calm down and to think clear, *where could he be?* she asked herself. Quickly, she replayed the day in her mind… Tree climbing, playing hide and seek, catching bugs, playing I spy with my little eye, the Toad and… Mr. Pointers! She remembered how impressed they where because of the big beautiful Lizard.

Faba decided to go to the rock, she didn’t checkit jet. She flew low over the little field, around some bushes and when she saw the rock, her hope was gone again. Nox wasn’t there. She sat down on the rock, she wasn’t cold anymore because she’d been flying for a while, but noticed the temperature difference from the rock eitherway.

Her legs felt warmth from where the sun had been shining but her buttocks felt earlier like cooling down… Exactly at the place where she remembered Mr. Pointers had been...

Faba was a clever girl and understood that it meant that Mr. Pointers wasn’t gone for long jet. She decided to search for him as well.

“Vaaander!! Misteeer Pointeeerss!!! Are you there?” She shouted and checked the area for prints. No answer… but the grass was flattened beside the rock.

She followed the trail, it went overfrom grass to sand and she could see Mr. Pointers footprints now. She realized how big he was, the prints of his claws where almost as big as her hands. The trail lead her to a enormous hole in the sand, underneath a pile of rocks.

“Mr. Pointers?” she tried carefully,… no answer…

“Mr. Pointers?” she said louder now. She swore she’d heard something.

“Mr. Pointers, I am looking for Nox, it’s getting colder, the sun is setting and I am scared.” she said out loud, painfully aware that she was worrying.

Faba let herself fall in the sand, if Mr. Pointers didn’t respond, then… what? Again she heard something and then she saw a glimmer in the dark hole, and another one! “Mr. Pointers?” Faba said with tears of relieve.

“Faba.., little fairy.., calm down..,” Mr. Pointers said slowly with the low voice she recognized from earlier that day. “Nox is here…, he has to tell you something.., please follow me..” the sparkling lizard said.

The hole was so big, that Faba only needed to lower her head and bend her back a bit.

And like this, she followed Mr. Pointers into the hole, just following the reflecting lights on his body. The hole was enormous, Faba realized. They went down, left, down right and right again, up in a curve bend to the left down, the tunnel went on, and on, and on, to Faba’s idea. After a minute, or maybe more, she realized she wouldn’t be able to find the way out anymore, but she trusted Mr. Pointers.

After a while, she finally arrived in a bigger area, it was quite dark, but lighter as the tunnel had been. She looked around and saw leaves, piled up in a corner, snail houses, dried out fruit pelts, she also saw little bones. At this moment she felt unease coming over her, where was Nox? “Nox?” she whispered with a high tone, “Are you there?”

It was quiet, no answer, “Nox?” she said a bit louder, almost crying again.

Suddenly she felt a hard tuck on her shoulder, she shrieked. The tuck was so hard that it turned her around and she fell in Nox' arms. “You, Creature,” she said still disturbed because of all the stress she’d experienced. “Everything is oké Faba,” Nox hugged Faba tight, he was happy to see her. “Everything is oke? How can you possibly think, everything is oke?” she snapped to him. “I have been looking for you, I was worried sick, I even flew up high to search for you.”

“How do you think to go home? It’s getting dark!” Faba kept on rattling, and rattling, and rattling. Nox just stood there, watched and listened how she was throwing out her anger, worries and thoughts. When she was finished, he knew he had to come with solutions or something clever.

Luckily Mr. Pointers had given him already some head ups, they could sleep there. Nox told Faba that they where able to sleep in Mr. Pointers Hole, she wasn’t really pleased to sleep there, but it was better then staying outside en being exposed to predators.

Nox explained everything what happened after their fight. He had been sad en regretted his behavior against Faba. Nox had been talking with Mr. Pointers about it and found out that they didn’t always had to agree on everything, but accept each others opinion at least. Mr. Pointers knew things, he couldn’t know, he had foreseen that Faba would come and that she was able to follow his tracks. Faba wanted to know more about Mr. Pointers, but was a little bit shy to ask.

The shiny lizard pointed out some fruits and showed them where to get some water to drink, the little two where thirsty and hungry.

For a long time they talked, how long it was exactly? Faba and Nox didn’t know, the hole was pretty dark and it seemed impossible to keep track of time. They learned a lot about Mr. Pointers. He had had a hard, long live and received his beautiful colors and skin because he’d done some good deeds and he thought that was also the reason why he was so old. It was interesting and inspiring to hear his stories about his adventures and all the places he visited, the lizard seemed very wise to Faba and Nox. The most impressive story Mr. Pointers told them, was about another world, with creatures who had almost no magic at all. Some creatures in this world were a bit like Faba and Nox, but much bigger. Probably those creatures, human beings, became very inventive because of the lack of magic. Suddenly Mr. Pointers said: “It is time to go to sleep kids.” He gave Faba and Nox a cosy, warm place to lay themselves down. They were both tiered from this interesting but long day and slept in no time.

Part V (Getting out)

Faba and Nox had fallen in a deep dreamless sleep after the intense day before. A new day was coming, would there be an adventure in it for them as well?

“Faba,” someone whispered in her right ear, “Faba.” Faba was not really awake jet, she turned around and tried continuing sleeping. “Faba,” she heard in her left ear now. “Let me sleep,” she murmured.

“No, Faba you have to wake up,” the voice responded. Slowly she opened her eyes, she noticed it was still dark, she didn’t really understand what was going on. She turned around to her left shoulder and saw Nox' face close to hers. “What is going on?” she asked Nox.

“We slept over in Mr. Pointers house, do you remember Faba?” Nox said calm. Suddenly Faba’s brain functioned again, images from the day before came back to her. It had been an interesting but also exhausting day. “How long did I sleep?” she asked Nox. “I don’t know, I don’t even know what day it is, what time and Mr. Pointers is gone as well,” he answered doubting.

Faba sat up, really waking up now, it was strange to be there, it was dark. “Do you think we can go home now?” she asked Nox, she really wanted to go home.

“I don’t know,” Nox said, “but I know I really want to go home.”

“Do you remember the way you came in?” Nox asked, “Mr. Pointers is not here anymore.” Faba didn’t know it anymore, but she thought it was worth a try.

Mr. Pointers would have foreseen them leaving, if they where able to find the way out either way.

“Let’s try,” she said and together they went into the dark tunnel that lead them there. They could hardly see, it had been brighter when Mr. Pointers was there, because the littlest of light had been reflecting on his skin.

They came upon cross-points and road bends that went up and then down again, it was like a maze. Faba and Nox agreed to take the way that was leading up every time they saw one and change directions every crosspoint. The idea was, that they wouldn’t walk in circles, if it was the right desiccion, only Mr, Pointers new.

It was confusing and stressing both of them, sometimes they argued a bit, but they were quiet most of the time. Suddenly Faba said: “I think it’s getting lighter Nox.” “I agree with you Faba,” he said.

They went one bend further and followed the road that seemed lighter. Finally they where getting somewhere, they thought, until they where back in the same hole where they had been eating and sleeping.

Nox suddenly bursted out in anger, “Where is Mr. Pointers! I want to go home!” Nox kicked against a piece of bone, he had lost his sense of time and place now. It was frustrating them, Faba went to Nox and hugged him, she buried her head in his neck.

“I want to go home as well,” she said. She forced herself loose and looked Nox in the eyes. “Wow! Faba!” Nox said, “your eyes are beautiful.”

“The purple spots are so bright, it’s like they are glowing!”

“I know,” Faba answered disappointed, “but it wont bring us home.” “Let’s go,” she said without hesitation, “we will find our way out and home.” With that said they left the hole and where sure to take another route this time. Faba remembered when she came in, she had to go up and one very steep tunnel down, she tried not to think about how to walk this time, but follow her senses. Again, they went right and left, up and down, then another tunnel that wentup and was very steep. A crosspoint to the right later and they started to see light again. “Nox, will it be the exit this time?” she asked insecure. “I hope so,” he replied not convinced jet.

They where able to see the walls of the tunnel now and saw clear scratches, it looked like they where Mr. Pointers claws that left it. Another bend, and it became lighter, another curve and now they where sure.

The last area was enormous, like a big hall, trees could stand up straight in it for sure. Nox spontaneously gave Faba a big hug, grabbed her hand and together they ran outside.

Finding the way out had already been a small adventure to them, it had made them sad and a bit angry as  well, but they were becoming a team. Will the adventure continue?
